Lava Ocean Adventures leaves nearly every day to show people the lava up close and personal as it enters the ocean near Kalapana. We have both taken this boat and the trip is absolutely amazing. You experience Madame Pele at her best. We highly recommend Lava Ocean Adventures for this excursion.

Island Birthday

Today, November 6, 2010, is our three year island birthday. Wow how time has flown, seems just like yesterday we were unloading our crate and getting ready for our first guest to check in two days later. Island living has definitely been a learning experience and Todd and I can both honestly say that it's been an adventure of a lifetime. Here's to many more island birthdays!!

We Survived the Tsunami

Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) to all our many guests for their warm wishes and good thoughts sent our way. The wave missed the Big Island for the most part and everything is fine.

Warm, Dry Weather

We have been experiencing the driest and warmest winter in years here in the islands. It was made for gorgeous weather, but our side of the Big Island is now officially in a drought. Seems strange when the rest of the country is experiencing extreme snow and rain. Apparently whenever the mainland encounters an El Nino year, the islands experience drought like conditions. Here at Coconut Cottage B&B, we've had to purchase water three times already. Normally our water comes from the heavens and is stored in our 15,000 gallon catchment tank. After going through two particulate and one UV filtration systems, the water is drinkable and I have to say the best water I've ever tasted.

So come on over now to get out of the cold mainland weather and enjoy some of the best weather we've had. Aloha, Coconut Cottage Bed & Breakfast

Two Year Island Anniversary

This is Jerry and Todd's two year island anniversary and also the two year anniversary for Coconut Cottage Bed & Breakfast. Amazing how time flies. Body Boarding at Poho'iki

Jerry went body boarding the other day at Poho'iki bay, AKA Isaac Hale State Park, and went beyond first bay to second bay. He was amazed at the number of surfing honos (sea turtles) sharing the waves with him and the other boarders and surfers. The crystal clear sunlight would shine on the 5 foot waves and he could count 5-7 turtles within the waves just enjoying a ride on the swells. The Big Island is truly an amazing place. Turtles, Turtles, Turtles!!!

We discovered a beach area in Hilo called Carl Smith Beach. We've driven by many times and finally stopped. It's a beautiful lagoon with crystal clear water--like a swimming pool. We saw three turtles yesterday and some kids were even feeding one of them. The really neat thing was that they were just hanging out there; not like other times when you see them for about 30 seconds and then there are gone. We will definitely recommend this spot to guests. The Red Jade

Our red jade is going off and it's absolutely beautiful. It has actually gone off two times in the last three months, which is extremely rare--it must be very happy. We will post pictures of it shortly. Aloha, Coconut Cottage B&B

Back on Island

We at Coconut Cottage Bed & Breakfast are very happy to have our co-innkeeper Jerry back on island. He has been on the mainland do marketing consulting for his previous law firm. He is happy to be back to the Big Island B&B lifestyle.

Heading Back to the Islands

Jerry is happy to learn that he will be heading back to Coconut Cottage B&B this Saturday. He has been doing consulting work for his old firm in California. He has missed the Big Island and especially his Big Island bed & breakfast.

During the holidays we would like to wish all of our guests a very joyous season and a Happy New Year. We have had several requests for recommendations on our favorite Hawaiian holiday music, so we decided to share with you our top three selections (all are available on iTunes). The Makaha Sons, Christmas Day in Hawaii Nei Amy Hanaiali’i, A Hawaiian Christmas The Hawaii Calls Orchestra, A Merry Hawaiian Christmas During this holiday season we would also like to share with you the recipe for our banana muffins/bread. It is one of our most requested recipes. 1 cup sugar 3 bananas (6 if using apple bananas) 2 eggs ½ cup butter 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt (omit if using salted butter) 1 cup nuts (optional) Mix with fork. Bake in greased muffin tins at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. If in a bread tin, bake at 300 degrees for one hour. Summertime

Aloha!!!

Yes it is summertime in beautiful Hawaii and we are enjoying all that the Big Island has to offer. We continue to welcome guests from all over the world. We currently have our first "threepeats" staying with us and it feels like welcoming family back to the B&B. Our guests are enjoying Madame Pele's nightly shows--she very rarely disappoints. A number of guests have gone on boat excursions out to see the lava up close and personal. They say that it's an experience of a lifetime and Jerry has to agree. In July Jerry and his son, Christian, took a boat out to see the lava and as guests have said, it's incredible.

The fall looks to be busy with guests from all over and we look forward to celebrating the holidays in Hawaiian style.!
